Mathematics Laboratory is a place
where students can learn and explore mathematical concepts and verify
mathematical facts and theorems through a variety of activities using different
materials. These activities may be carried out by the teacher or the student to
explore, to learn, to stimulate interest and develop favourable attitude
towards mathematics.
Laboratory
in Mathematics is the brain child of Mr.Sreedhara Chandra Sekhara Sastry,
a creative mathematician. The Maths Lab consists of more than 200 models in
various branches of maths like Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic’s, etc. which are
of great help to students from K.G to 12th.The models are so
designed to cater to the needs of all segments of teachers and learners in
verifying formulae results and applications etc., irrespective of curriculum.
Sri
Chandra Sekhara Sastry Garu is considered to be a pioneer in the field of
mathematical education. He published several mathematical books, some alone and
some with his students. He is an architect of mathematics laboratories. His
great mathematical innovative models are finding applications in many fields
today. Recently he was conferred with 'Innovative Teacher' award by AMTI,
Chennai for this great works and contribution for the development of
mathematics education.
Recently
sastry garu participated in CoSMED 2009 (International Conference on Science
and Mathematics Education) Penang, Malaysia. There he represented India and
Presented few papers. For this he got accolades from the International
fraternity. It is a rare opportunity that one gets. In that seminar, he could
able to present that Indian standards are high and made the country proud.( Click

to all the generations. He proved that there are no short cuts to success. He
remarked that unwavering effort, perseverance and undoubted self confidence are
the only pillars for success.
"The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated but to make complicated things simple."
The
learning styles of the children is not the same universally. Some learn by Text
book and blackboard method whereas many do not. This turns children
disinterested and even phobic towards learning especially, mathematics. This
issue is well addressed in the recent Hindi hit movie "Tare Zameen
Par".
When
children’s body is arrested in desk and bench for hours and mind is caged in
the textbook and blackboard, the result is - what it is today. The blatant
truth is many a students do not enjoy mathematics whereas there future and
career is dependent so much on doing well in this subject.
Touched
by the dismay of the struggle of the children, I took up a research for a more
interesting way of learning that can suit learning styles of most of the
children and not just the so called toppers. Consequently, here comes the
solution:
"Mathematics
Lab"
The
children rejoice mathematics rather than turning into phobic. This gives all
the freedom to a child to use the 3d Mathematics Model to explore, experiment
and understand mathematical concepts through activities. They do not just learn
but experience how a formulae derived by physically manipulating the learning
material.
This well researched and well tried lab has got churned out as a soothing solution to the difficult experiences of the students, teachers and the managements of the caring schools. The teachers find it convenient to explain many a difficult topics. The management finds it a handy tool project the image of their infrastructure with the presence of Mathematics Lab in the school. Because all the schools and parents with a futuristic vision have started acquiring the “Mathematics Lab”, so do not lag behind. Moreover the boards are working towards making mathematics lab mandatory along with marks for internal assessment, so gear up for the future.
